‘No, Macy, I have to disagree with you’: Jeff Bezos claps back at an Amazon customer complaining about the Black Lives Matter site banner

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos personally responded to a customer’s email expressing disapproval of the site’s Black Lives Matter banner.

Bezos posted screenshots of the exchange on Friday, redacting the last name of the person who emailed him.

The customer, solely identified as Macy, wrote in the email that it was “quite disturbing” to see the banner at the top of the website, saying “for your company to blast this on your website is very offensive to me and I’m sure you’ll be hearing from others.” The email had “ALL LIVES MATTER!” in bold and written in all caps.

“And if it wasn’t for all of these lives providing their service to your [sic] and your company, where would Amazon be today?” the customer concluded in the email.

In response, Bezos simply started off writing, “No, Macy, I have to disagree with you.” He explained how the statement of “black lives matter” doesn’t negate the importance of other lives.

“Black lives matter speaks to racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system,” Bezos wrote.

Bezos wrote about how, as a white man, he doesn’t have to worry about his son, Preston, when being detained by police, but the same can’t be said about black parents.

“I have a 20-year-old son, and I simply don’t worry that he might be choked to death while being detained one day,” the Amazon CEO continued. “It’s not something I worry about. Black parents can’t say the same.”

He went on to express his support for the ongoing protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.

The protests, which entered their 11th day on Friday, erupted across the US and in places around the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of people demanding justice for black people who unjustly died at the hands of police officers.

“None of this is intended to dismiss or minimize the very real worries you or anyone else might have in their own life, but I want you to know I support this movement that we see happening all around us, and my stance won’t change.”
